Make a Great First Impression - What You Wear Matters!

Streetwear Clothing

Did you know that every single person who looks at you is judging you, whether they realize it or not!

It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed. How often have you met someone and afterwards thought, "I wonder what they think of me" or think that you may have given them the wrong impression because you wore your scruffy old track pants and jersey? Or vice versa, when you meet someone, do you automatically categorize them as maybe being a student, rich, or lazy? Every person does it, most times subconsciously. It is then that you realize that what you wear does matter!

With every new encounter, you are evaluated and that person forms an impression of you. These impressions are almost impossible to reverse or undo, making those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for the relationship that may follow. On many occasions I have seen and experienced these first impressions and how difficult they are to reverse. In my spare time I instruct fitness classes at a local gym, and of course I meet hundreds of people for the first time every day. I am wearing my gym training gear, shouting instructions to the members and getting everybody motivated. Of course, when the gym members find out I am a clothing designer, they find it very difficult to comprehend and change their perception of me as a fitness instructor, as they are polar opposites, how can this be! Experiencing this judgement constantly makes me understand how important what you wear has on other people's perceptions of you, and if you want it to be a good one, you had better be looking sharp!

It is human nature to constantly make these appraisals, in business and social environments. You may hardly have said a word, however once this three-second evaluation is over, what you say in conversation will not change it.

You can learn to make a positive and lasting first impression, modify it to suit any situation, and come out a winner.

As we now know that people judge us on our appearance and what we are wearing, we can manipulate and use this into our advantage, because we know that this is inevitable, we may as well turn it into something positive for us.

If you are fresh out of University with a degree behind you, you will no doubt have had your fair share of interviews for jobs. On most occasions, the person that makes the best first impression will get the job. If you are interviewing for an Accountancy firm wearing your casual hoody and jeans (the hoody and jeans may be brand new even), you will obviously not get the job. Whether you believe what you are wearing is relevant or not, whether you believe it is fair or not, the outcome will always be the same. The interviewers will have decided you are too casual in your approach, are not professional enough, will not fit into their culture, possibly not a motivated individual and have a low emotional intelligence. All this from wearing hoody and jeans!! What the interviewee should have worn is a crisp shirt, tie and trousers, possibly with a suit jacket to match if desired. Immediately having walked into the room, the interviewers would deduce that this person is articulate, considered, professional, well mannered, and basically knows what he is doing.

Maybe you have an interview for a creative job or work in a business as a Graphics Designer or Software Developer. For this it would be far more ideal to wear a styled dress shirt with jeans or trousers and really smart shoes (no tie). You want to give your clients, customers and other employees the impression and perception that you are creative, that you are innovative! And when you look and feel it, you become it!

You will remember what we talked about earlier on, that with every new encounter, you are evaluated and that person forms an impression of you. These impressions are almost impossible to reverse or undo, making those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for the relationship that may follow.

To people in general, the importance of what other people think of us is a powerful force. You want to give your clients, customers, employees, friends, co-workers, and people you meet for the first time a great impression and perception of you that works in your favour.

Success in life comes to those with integrity, those with self belief, and those that make a great first impression. What you wear matters! So always think about what you are wearing and what impression this is going to make for you.
