Jeans
Many people are aware of the roots that blue jeans have in America. They are a symbol of everything America is supposed to be: free from the status quo. It is nearly impossible to distinguish social and economic status of any individual wearing a pair of them. They are the invention of Jacob Davis, but were made famous by the entrepreneur Loeb Strauss who later changed his name to Levi. On May 7th, 1873 the patent for them was received from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Jeans
Jacob Davis had invented the riveted pockets of the blue jeans at the pocket's stress points for a customer of his pants. The customer would constantly bother Davis over the holes that developed in his pockets. It was this that gave Jacob the inspiration for the riveted pockets. He did not have the at that time to file a patent, however, and wrote to Strauss offering to file it jointly with him in exchange for Strauss paying the patent filing fee.

Great Hip Hop dancers and teachers ooze confidence when they dance. Being confident when you dance is integral to giving a great performance. Having an alter ego can dramatically increase how confident you feel when you dance.

Therefore, having been in the Street Dance industry for the last 18 years, and having taught thousands of people worldwide, I believe that you definitely want to encourage your students to create their own alter ego. After all, why wouldn't you want them to be more confident when they dance and to improve as dancers?

What is an alter ego?
Many top artists and performers have spoken in the past about taking on an alter ego when they perform. One of the most famous is probably Beyonce's alter ego 'Sasha Fierce'. When Beyonce wants to go for it and give it her all, she talks about letting Sasha Fierce do her thang! By doing this, she says she is more able to commit to her performance. I say if it is good enough for Beyonce, it is good enough for me!
Why encourage your students to take on an alter ego?
If your students are not giving 100% or they are not throwing themselves into the choreography, you may want to suggest that they take on an alter ego of their own. This will help them liven up their performance of your choreography and feel more confident when they dance.
If you encourage your students to do this, you will find that they dance with more confidence. By stepping into the shoes of someone else, your students let their own inhibitions go. After all, it isn't them dancing, but someone else who is maybe better equipped to give more energy, dance with more passion and generally throw themselves into the choreography with more commitment. In my experience, when students imagine they are somebody else, (somebody more confident, sexy, loud, energetic, bubbly or whatever it is they need), they relax, dance better and give a better performance.
4 steps to creating your very own alter ego
So you may be thinking - great, I now know why I should have one, but how do I go about creating one for myself?
Follow my 4 step process below, to utilise this technique:
Name your alter ego. Dress as they would dress. Ask yourself 'what might they say to themselves in their head? Ask yourself, 'what do they believe about their dancing ability?
For example, a student might say:
Her name is Slick & Sexy Sarah She dresses in the latest street wear and wears it with style - so I will do this. She says "I'm awesome" to herself in her head Slick & Sexy Sarah knows she looks hot and can bang out the moves
Lead your dance students through my 4 step process. Just by going through this process, your students will feel more confident and be able to commit to the choreography even more. If your students do this, you'll see different students appear before your very own eyes.
Have fun with this technique and encourage your students to do it too. You'll be amazed at the results you get!

They were known for their rugged durability. Right after the exclusive patent rights expired and the invention became public domain, many companies started manufacturing blue jeans. Because in the 19th century they were worn by the working class, they were a symbol of the working man. The wealthier, pampered members of society did not wear blue jeans during this era.
During World War II, blue jeans gained the popularity overseas that they had garnished many years before in America. Foreigners admired the pants worn by American soldiers. The end result was that they were no longer solely American. Europeans and other foreigners could now enjoy the benefits of the rugged denim. Shortly after World War II with jeans now internationally recognized as a durable, comfortable pair of pants, sales skyrocketed.
Jeans were a symbol of rebels during much of the mid-20th century, up until the 1980s. Rebel figures like James Dean in movies wore blue jeans almost exclusively while the older more conservative generation did not. Blue jeans continued their tradition as a symbol of revolution into the 60s and 70s as they were the pants of choice among hippies. Jeans would become more main-stream again in the 1980s.
The 1980s were when designers started creating and labeling their own jeans. It was during this time period that jeans were a symbol of high fashion. Sales for jeans skyrocketed during this decade. They were more accepted at this point than they ever had been. Blue jeans lost popularity in the decade following the 80s as children scoffed at wearing clothing their parents wore. While blue jeans were still worn among kids, they had to be different from the traditional straight down blue denim their parents grew up in. As a result, many jeans manufacturers either had to retool their designs to keep up with the times or face possible bankruptcy.
Blue jeans continue to be worn today and still cloak the status of the wearer. Their ruggedness and durability appeal to both the poor and rich alike. Currently jeans are making a fashion comeback and the traditional jeans manufacturers have fragmented as a result of the past two decades filling various niches. Whatever path blue jeans may take, their roots are entrenched in American soil.

With artists like Tinie Tempah, Example, Wretch 32, and all the others bringing UK urban music into the mainstream, it only makes sense that their looks and fashion sense have been brought to the forefront of the UK fashion scene.
Snapbacks work for several reason, with the first being that they only come in one adjustable size, taking the stress out of selecting a fitted flat cap and not knowing the sizing, or finding that style you've been after for ages and then finding out the shop doesn't have your size!!
Where Mitchell & Ness snapbacks have got it right is their retro throwback designs, and contrasting colours using the team colours on the caps. With the recent blow up of college and varsity jackets, and now more recently cuffed jeans and chinos, these retro looking snapbacks tie in extremely well with people's existing wardrobes without having to force them to rethink outfits. But like any great fashion piece, they make the outfit look unique and contemporary at the same time.
And yet its still hard to find a local stockist in the UK unless you're located in one of the bigger cities.. but why bother limiting your self to your local area when it is becoming easier day by day to shop online? The benefits of shopping online are huge when compared to popping into a shopping centre. Most shops are limited by their floor space and so can't hold as big a range as they would like to of the products they stock, and even when they do, its hard to display them properly so you might miss out on one you're after. This problem doesn't happen online, where you clearly see all the caps listed, and can refine search by teams/colours/price etc. The level of service is normally better, and its easy to find a great deal online. Not only that, but most websites ship all around the world, and have easy return policies.
Without doubt, the best Mitchell & Ness ranges are found on the internet. Streetwear and urban retailers stock the brand, so its easy to go and find a Mitchell & Ness Snapback. All you need to do is do a Google search on "Buy Mitchell & Ness UK" or if you know the team you're after, put that in the search bar too!
